A declassified CIA press file (CIA-RDP79B01737A000900010011-3) preserving two period articles on North American air defense: William A. Ulman, ‘Russian Planes Are Raiding Canadian Skies,’ Collier’s, 16 October 1953 (the Bell Telephone Laboratories engineer’s ‘one, two, many … or jeepers creepers!’ description of the warning fence, and the experts ‘already calling’ the second fence DEW Line II); and Newsweek’s ‘Air Defense: Not Perfect Now - And Never Can Be,’ 2 November 1953, p. 26, which lists as the US military’s first goal ‘a belt of radar installations across Canada, the so-called McGill line,’ worth ‘two hours more warning at least’ - seven months before Canada’s Cabinet approved it. We verified both quotes against the page scans; the underlying magazine texts remain the publishers’ copyright, so we cite and quote rather than host.
