CAM-MAIN was one of four Canadian Main stations on the DEW Line, alongside PIN-MAIN (Cape Parry), FOX-MAIN (Hall Beach), and DYE-MAIN (Cape Dyer). Serving as the military Data Center for the CAM Sector and a primary transportation hub, it had a deeper and more lasting impact on its surrounding community than perhaps any other DEW Line station — the construction and operation of CAM-MAIN directly catalyzed the transformation of Cambridge Bay from a seasonal Inuit camp into a permanent settlement.
CAM Sector stations
During the DEW era, CAM-MAIN controlled eleven subordinate stations — five auxiliary and six intermediate — one of the largest sectors on the line:

Site layout
The station occupied 1,627 acres along the coastal margin of a rolling plateau at approximately 100 feet above sea level, with steep cliffs (40–80 feet) bordering the western arm of the bay. The landscape featured innumerable swamp-margined lakes and ponds, with Uvayuq (Mount Pelly), at 200 metres (656 feet), rising approximately 15 km to the northeast. Potable water was pumped from a lake through a heated pipeline. Climate extremes at the station ranged from −62°F (−52°C) to +77°F (+25°C), with approximately 29 inches of annual snowfall.
Radar and communications
During the DEW era, CAM-MAIN used the AN/FPS-19 L-band search radar housed in a geodesic radome, with tropospheric scatter antennas providing long-haul communications to adjacent stations. The site housed a military-manned Data Center — a feature it shared with PIN-MAIN, distinguishing these stations from those where contractors operated the sector headquarters. With the North Warning System transition in September 1989, the site received an AN/FPS-117 solid-state 3-D radar, which remains operational today.
Operations
CAM-MAIN operated as one of six Main stations on the primary DEW Line, providing sector command and communications hub functions alongside POW-MAIN, BAR-MAIN, PIN-MAIN, FOX-MAIN, and DYE-MAIN. The CAM Sector was one of the largest on the line, with eleven subordinate stations spanning Victoria Island and the central Arctic coast. The six intermediate gap-filler sites were closed in 1963 when the AN/FPS-23 Doppler detection concept was scaled back across the entire line.
Community impact
The area around Cambridge Bay has approximately 4,000 years of indigenous habitation, from pre-Dorset cultures through to the Thule ancestors of modern Inuit, who arrived circa 1250 CE. A LORAN navigational beacon had served the area from 1947, but it was the DEW Line that transformed Cambridge Bay into a permanent settlement.
Approximately 200 Inuit were hired to help build the station beginning in 1955. Many stayed permanently, and a community formed across the bay, with schools and municipal services following. The DEW Line brought wage employment, air service, and infrastructure that anchored what had been a seasonal camp into a year-round settlement — a pattern seen elsewhere in the Arctic but nowhere more dramatically than at Cambridge Bay.
Transition and current status
CAM-MAIN transitioned to the North Warning System in September 1989 with the installation of an AN/FPS-117 solid-state 3-D radar. The DEW Line was formally inactivated and the NWS officially activated on 15 July 1993. Today the site operates as both a Long Range Radar and Logistic Support Site (LRR/LSS), one of the largest continuously manned NWS stations with approximately 18 personnel. Cambridge Bay itself has grown into the administrative center for the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut, with a population of approximately 1,900.
